A series of research activities of the Department between 2017 and 2020, under the leadership of Anton Guhl, has given the history of technical universities greater visibility in established university history. This resulted in two anthologies in particular: one takes stock of the proceedings of a corresponding lecture series held by the department in 2018, the other examines traditions and changes in university anniversaries.

In teaching, this field of research was conveyed via project seminars and student projects. In 2020, a public event, sponsored by the University Rectors' Conference, took stock of the state of the research on the history of the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center. As part of a cooperative project, the Baden State Library has also digitized thousands of original sources on the history of education in Baden and made them available online. Not least, this provides an important basis for future studies on the prehistory of today's KIT.
