In 2017 and 2018, the Department of History organized two workshops entitled: "What can history of technology contribute to reflecting on technology futures?" / "The contribution of the history of technology to understanding technology futures", two workshops discussed the experiences of colleagues from Germany and Europe in communicating technology history expertise: in dialogue with professional associations, lobby organizations, and higher levels of management in companies, as well as in interdisciplinary debates within the scientific community, processes of citizen participation, preservation of historical monuments, journalism, or in contact with NGOs. Both events served to conceptualize the research field and emphasized individual reports of experiences and plenary discussions. The proceeds have since been used to further open up the research field of historical technology futures.
Taking a broader approach directed beyond historical questions, the department organized an online workshop "Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Technology Futures" in Fall 2022 with funding from the Institute for Technology Futures (ITZ) and the participation of several chairs from the ITZ as well as ITAS. With a number of external guests from Germany, Europe and the USA, definitions of the concept "Technology Futures" were discussed as well as the distinction to related, already established concepts. A follow-up workshop in early 2024 will serve to prepare a corresponding publication.
