The relationship between nationalism and religion is determined in historical research by the debate with the secularization theory. In this view, the connections of the meta-ideology of nationalism with forms of revelatory religion appear primarily as variations of inner-worldly redemptive substitute religion. However, this self-fulfilling phrophecy loses sight of the highly problematic forms of sacralization of the political, in which especially Reformation theologians directly participated, e.g. German-Christian theology in National Socialism as a bridge between Luther and Hitler. The lecture puts this contradiction up for discussion.
