On the 100th anniversary of the founding of the German Reich on January 18, 1871, the then German President Gustav Heinemann gave a thoughtful radio and television address. Born in 1899, he was one of the older Germans in 1971 who still had a memory of the empire. Heinemann was interested in setting the ambivalence of the tradition of 1871 in relation to the lessons to be learned from German history between 1871 and 1945. This is also what the lecture with subsequent discussion attempts to do. A particular concern is to see the founding of the Reich as one of many possible answers to certain historical-political challenges in context.
